Workshop on Safety and Efficacy for New Techniques and Imaging using New Equipment supporting European Legislation, Delft, The Netherlands, 18-20 April 2007

Health services in the EU are of growing importance. Within this context radiological imaging is gaining increasing prominence and now accounts for 10% of hospital revenue and 15% of capital investment budgets. This increase has been driven by new developments in equipment, digital imaging, medical devices & IT industries, and paralleled by novel clinical practices and modalities. Striking examples include the introduction of digital technologies to replace film and the range of sophisticated angiographic techniques now used widely.

The SENTINEL project deals with radiation protection, safety and related issues that arise from these developments. In practice the project deals with almost all radiological digital imaging outside of computed tomography (CT). The findings within the SENTINEL EU Co-ordination Action will be presented at an international workshop. Specific sessions will be devoted to new developments in cardiac and interventional radiology, mammography, quality control and equipment standards, ethics and justification, and basic patient dosimetry/staff dosimetry. Special sessions will be devoted to paediatric radiology, DEXA, colonoscopy, nuclear medicine, hybrid imaging techniques including PET/CT and new detectors for imaging.
