International Conference on Modern Radiotherapy, Versailles, France, 2-4 December 2009

Prevention of radiotherapy incidents and accidents is a major issue. After severe accidents occurred recently in France, the French Nuclear Safety Authority (ASN) has taken several initiatives in strengthening the control of radiotherapy centers (inspection) and the regulation (quality assurance). An international conference on "Modern Radiotherapy: Challenges and Advanvces in Radiation Protection of Patients", organized by ASN in Palais des Congres de Versailles, France, and taking place December 2-4 2009, is co-sponsored by the IAEA, WHO, EC and the French Society of Radiation Oncology (SFRO) and French Society of Medical Physics (SFPM). The main objective of the conference is to provide a forum for participants to exchange experience, and to review the actions implemented to improve the radiation safety in radiotherapy both at national and international level. The expectations from this conference are:

  • to reach a consensus about the necessity to strengthen existing international actions for prevention of incidents and accidents;
  • to set up an international cooperation to improve management of overexposed patients;
  • to outline a strategy for strengthening regulation;
  • to contribute to the elaboration of an international scale to rate patient related events for communication and reporting purpose.
